It is unfortunate that you may disagree with the presence of the views of a member of our humble readership. While we respect your right not to receive any future issues of CoN, we encourage you to set aside any differences and/or prejudices you may have against an individual and enjoy the content of our rag for what it's worth (we have to figure that one out for ourselves). If you disagree with the views made by a particular person, you are welcome to contribute a rebuttal. We simply ask you remain tolerant of everyone's freedom of speech. If this is unacceptable, please follow the guidelines outlined in Volume I, Issue VI for canceling your subscription. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Colin Barrett (blonde@io.org) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Empty Hearts by Francesca Piscioneri Empty hearts bleed static feeling Such that harnessed pain cries from silent tears But in empty hearts pain cries no tears For love hurts more than pain in empty hearts Just as man cries out in pain when hurt by love Man's tears only magnify a silent grief A silent grief that crowds an empty heart But an empty heart cannot discern love from grief So man is left with a static feeling which he calls love And although man believes he utters words love His words carry a hollow meaning So in fear of speaking with an empty heart I will not speak of love For love has already spoken to me Through you Franca ---------------------------------------------------------------- 3. CoN's Official WebSite! by Colin Barrett(blonde@io.org) "Don't worry. An issue will be out shortly." with a cheezy CoN icon is all net surfers saw when they viewed the Capital of Nasty homepage for the last two years... until now. All of CoN's issues are available through the homepage at: http://www.ifront.com/capnasty/ This URL may change, and if it does, our faithful readers will be promptly notified. Il Coglione D'oro by Colin Barrett (blonde@io.org) Well, Re|3eL, we know you kinda dislike those Web awards, but the Staff at Capital of Nasty feel they have one people will proudly display on their homepages--the Coglione D'Oro. The Coglione D'Oro was established in 1995 by CoN's founder and editor-in-chief, Leandro Asnaghi-Nicastro, to recognize, well, anything. Here is Leo's description of the prestigious award: The Award is a wonderful roman style pillar, with climbing leafs and a 320 grams spray-painted gold testicle sogging on it's side. If you know a homepage that you feel deserves this award, you can submit your nomination to one of the Capital of Nasty staff members. Nominations should include a valid URL (duh!) and a category. You make up the category for your nomination. If your nomination wins, we will notify the winner and post any responses from the winners in CoN. We hope to have one winner for each issue. So, please submit your nominations now! The Coglione D'Oro is currently on display at http://www.io.org:80/~blonde/doro.html ---------------------------------------------------------------- 5. FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!! by Jacqui (Re|3el) ============================== Yeah we all get them at some stage..and end up with quite a few dozen free disks from CompuServe, Prodigy, AOL, Pipex...... and the rest.... ever thought of some good uses for them ??? Take a load of this..... 1. Use for S.O.S signal for low-flying airplanes when stranded on a deserted island. 2. As a drinks coaster. 3. Use as a portable carry case for the most essential CD's. 4. Makes a simple evening clutch bag for all those yuppie cyber females or attach some string for an 'Ultra' small purse - for the plastic money mind you or maybe a couple of $$$ notes if you can squeeze 'em in. 5. Ever thought of a new design in Wall tiles ? 6. Keep 'em in the trunk of your car for extra traction when needed in snowy conditions. 7. Tape it to a ruler..and it makes a very deadly fly swatter "OUCH!!" 8. Deadly throwing stars. 9. Poker chips...I'll see your AOL and up you a Prodigy ;P 10. How about designer Cyber-wear..makes quite a ritzy evening dress when all strung together...just watch out it could be rather airy ;)) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 6. FASCIST by Leandro Asnaghi-Nicastro In a country built on the foundations of freedom, there are still certain upsetting events that make me wonder if indeed freedom is a part of our lives or just an illusion set to keep us quiet. It's a Thursday night, the night before my birthday. It's Peter, Dr. Max and myself, just sitting on a bench inside the playground of a schoolyard, talking. As we speak we all notice two individuals walking toward us. They are dressed casually, with short pants, one of them in his late 20s, the other one in his early 40s. We stop talking and we just stare at them walking toward us. The younger one pulls out a flashlight, one of those big Maglite ones, and asks "may I ask what you guys are doing here at night?". Just talking, chilling out, we answered. "May I see a piece of identification, please". It was an order more then a question. We all pull out our driving licenses. "Do you have any drugs, alcohol?". At this question we all looked at each other "We are just talking, chilling out" we answered again. The two officers looked at each other, probably not believing a word of what we said. They wrote down our names, phone numbers, our height, eyes and hair color, and kept on asking "you sure you have no drugs?". Is it too darned strange that we are just sitting here, talking? They radioed our names to the station, got three 10/40 and they relaxed. A 10/40 means we were 'clear', no records found. "Thank you for your time" said the older one while returning our documents. "Do you want us to leave?" I asked. "Well, you are not supposed to be here..." and he pointed his flashlight towards the wall. The beam illuminated a sign that said 'no trespassing in schoolyard after 9PM', perfectly hidden and almost unreadable. "..but" he continued "I'd rather have you here, then stealing cars". I was tempted to ask if he was going to teach us how. "thanks again guys, you were the most polite we've stopped". We watched them walk away in the darkness, and sat down only when they had disappeared. The night was ruined, we all felt sort of violated. I can't blame the cops for what they did. We live in a society were the majority of people my age are engaged in illegal activities. However I don't think I'd be in a schoolyard talking to someone, if my favorite past-time was stealing cars or dealing with drugs. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Pandora's Box by Hijal Sirine People are killing each other in Burundi and some horrible crimes, inhuman and plain evil are being brought to the light in the Hague...Why, I ask you, have we gone this far? And when will we be able to get rid of all the horror and the death.... What motivation could justify humanity's cruelty... And don't be mislead by appearances: Everyday, in the relationships of everyday life, in the most civilized of countries (Does Canada count? Or the USA maybe) every single one of us experiences a small death every day...It's inside us all, whether we want it or not... Is it our Epee de Damocles or should we call it our Pandora'box??? Just this instinct in us all to harm others.... Sorry for these really depressing thoughts but I have this need to exorcise these feelings. I'm tired, fed up of hearing the words "genocide, nationalism, ethnic cleansing, massacre, wipe out, war, rape, revenge, Rwanda, Bosnia, crimes against humanity, anti-Semitism, AIDS, homicide, honor, pride, separatism, Tom Cruise, felony, parole, violence, terrorists, shooting, beating, killing and O.J. Simpson". Fed up!!! And I'm even more fed up of the people who accuse me of being naive, and unrealistic... Enfin, I disgress and am starting to sound like Elizabeth Taylor on one of her fund-raisers...But I can't help but think that we can overcome this great obstacle....We NEED to do it to go beyond, to become all that we can be... Oh! I got carried away again, haven't I...I hope you appreciated this envolee lyrique... Hijal Sirine ---------------------------------------------------------------- 8. CoN: Issue VII - Submissions, Comments I found it a little upsetting that some people could get offended by what others write on CoN. This is a great excuse to set a few standards on articles submission from our readers: a) What can it be about? It can be about anything. It can be funny. It can be sad. It can even be upsetting. I hope we are all intelligent enough to read it and see what the person is trying to tell us. b) How long does it have to be? Not too long, not too short. Use any previous articles to get a general idea of the length. c) Personal information, do I have to tell them who I am? You don't have to. It would be appreciated if you did, but if you want to remain anonymous, we will respect your wishes. If you just want your name and no Email, that can be arranged as well. d) Content of the article, what should I not write? There isn't a precise subject that you can't write. The only thing that you want to keep in mind is personal attacks. If you have to offend someone or attack them in an unpolite way, please do it privately. CoN for us is an enjoyable hobby that keeps our minds active. We don't want to turn this into some sort of a flame forum. For all of those that supported us, a very special thanks. I'd like to thank especially Mek Y. at Internet Frontier for providing us with a place where to hide CoN, Stephanie J. for her wonderful help with Adobe Photoshop, Junko for her CAD tips, humor and positive remarks, Colin Barrett for building the CoN homepage, Neetu G. for always being there in shine or rain. Be happy, obey street signs, see you next Monday. ----------------------------------------------------------------
