This time, we are going to discuss a test that all of you already heard about. Turing? It is a test that "measures" your intelligence. Now, do you know what it is? :) me and my complications -_- the IQ test indeed So, a quick approach : Firstly, intelligence is hard to define. It can NOT be compared. We can NOT base our judgements upon it only. lol, of course The IQ, i.e. the Intellectual Quotient, is one of the ways to eval uate the intelligence. hey guys, joining in.. But, the 'General' intelligence. :qwertydawom!qwertydawo@bu-61EE8C6D.fbx.proxad.net MODE #lecture +m So, it is only an indirect measure, and.. not perfect. The reliability of this test has been estimated at >70%. "I.Q." is the generic term used since 1912, to denote the differen t tests of intelligence, or to denote the result one obtained to these tests. There are several types of IQs, which give different marking schem es. An example : To join Mensa(http://www.mensa.org/), you must have at least : * An IQ of 131 at the Wechsler, which is equivalent to * An IQ of 149,6 at the Catell and, * corresponds to (approx.) 20 people out of 100 * i.e. 2% of the people.. out of 1000 sorry Now, let's introduce the principle of the IQ : it is born in the USA during the WW1 in order to try and give the recruits the arms that suited them best. The series of tests relies on the one created by the french doctor Binet. So, you'll wonder : but, what do they test? Several intellectual abilities : *to solve problems *to reason *to understand concepts *to perceive relations 4 main categories : 1/ Spatial vision : visualize and manipulate objects in 3D 2/ Mathematical spirit : Solve problems and use logic. 3/ Linguistic expression : Find back sentences, recognize words. 4/ Memory : Memorize objects visually and orally. :qwertydawom!qwertydawo@bu-61EE8C6D.fbx.proxad.net MODE #lecture -m anyone? it's been clear up to now yep okee, I go on then. :qwertydawom!qwertydawo@bu-61EE8C6D.fbx.proxad.net MODE #lecture +m Now, let us study the results of this test (statitically) : statistically* People who have an IQ greater than : - Percentage 70 - 97.7 85 - 84 100 - 50 110 - 25 115 - 16 120 - 7 130 - 2.3 So, what can we say with this? the average is at 100. 2 people out of 3 have an IQ between 85 and 115. Some geniuses are >140. Now, since you're probably interested in knowing the people who ha ve a big IQ, I made a quick list for you : Thomas Jefferson : 145 Benjamin Franklin : 145 Mozart : 150 George Sand : 150 Lord Byron : 150 Charles Dickens : 155 Voltaire : 170 Thomas Chatterton : 170 Descartes : 180 John Stuart Mill : 190 Pascal : 195 \uffff Goethe 210 .. for more : http://hem.bredband.net/b153434/Index.htm :qwertydawom!qwertydawo@bu-61EE8C6D.fbx.proxad.net MODE #lecture -m Feel free to discuss those IQs. DAMN!!! and i thought my 148 was good it definitely is ;) lol the only problem with Pascal is naming the language :D well, compared to those... i mean like, 210... wow I feel stupid.. *sob* <[Ag0ny]> I have a question: yeah.... Einstein was *only* around 160 ... yes, go on Agony <[Ag0ny]> most of them on that list were very dead long before WWI <[Ag0ny]> so how would you rate their IQ? why do we say that Einstein's IQ was about 160? he nerver did a test how do you know he didn't Elda? i personally don't know, i just like people citing their sources <[Ag0ny]> most of them on that list were very dead long before WWI <[Ag0ny]> so how would you rate their IQ? --> that is an excellent question to be honest, I think these are "estimated" IQs I don't know if such tests existed but I don't think yes it's just estimation it might be the case with Einstein as well Einstein had a preponderant paper in WWII, how didn't it exist so it's a bit unusefull to say it was about 160, it's not the r eality It's estaminated, I think they didn't just made it up Elda, Ag0ny. you may want to read : http://www.geocities.com/einstein_library/i q.htm it's the same as with chess ratings Paul Morphy played before FIDE, but there are estimates based on his games (and he rocked too) exactly. <[Ag0ny]> ok anything else? not here nope <[Ag0ny]> the different scales, <[Ag0ny]> is there one that is used as a standard in the US? <[Ag0ny]> and is it different in the UK? I do not know. <[Ag0ny]> k I'll looki t up okee well, let's go on :qwertydawom!qwertydawo@bu-61EE8C6D.fbx.proxad.net MODE #lecture +m Now, I want to focus on two curious cases. These people are probably geniuses, with an extremely high IQ, but , it is controversed.. the 1st case is : William James Sidis (1898 - 1944) his IQ was >225 he was probably the greatest mind of the 20th century, but he refu ses to make the whole world benefit of it. That's why he's unknown for most people.. a quick summary of his life : at 1.5 years, he could read the newspaper 2 years : begins to study latin 7 : exam on anatomy 16 : gets a degree at Harvard 24 : treaty on antimatter 27 : treaty on cosmology predicting black holes to read the full list of his exploits : http://www.quantonics.com/ The_Prodigy_Review.html the 2nd case is : Marilyn vos Savant an IQ >228 able to solve the Rubik's cube extremely fastly was in the Guinness of records as the highest IQ :qwertydawom!qwertydawo@bu-61EE8C6D.fbx.proxad.net MODE #lecture -m "Billy knew all the languages (approximately 200) of the world, and could translate among them instantly!" that's relating to Sidis yeah.. i can't see how the hell he mastered Gray's Anatomy i have it here and i couldn't read 2 followed pages i do admire the pictures That's a book? I only knew the serie.. yeah it's a book ah.. two way's of spelling gray grey. <[Ag0ny]> I You.... <[Ag0ny]> I've heard that the learning patterns formed before age six shape your entire intellecutal life <[Ag0ny]> sorry typos abound today let me draw a comparison: i learnt calculus at 9/10; "At age 8, Bill y surpassed his father (a genius) in mathematics." hahaha sweet Ag0ny: i've heard there's a tendency of regression to the mean with IQs in your childhood it's bigger I'm 15, and still way behind on SysSpider. perhaps that's due to your ingenuity and simplicity of thinking lol Nick <[Ag0ny]> Sysspider, you already have learned calculus? yes <[Ag0ny]> multivariable? nope i actually dropped it for programming... :O i learnt the basics <[Ag0ny]> learn multivariable, it's usefull for writing programs and understandi ng graph theory oh i see, i'll do it then <[Ag0ny]> sorry we're off on a tangent but please qwerty, go on <[Ag0ny]> anyhow, qwertydawom no no, feel free to discuss that's it for now
